Dementia Interpreters Training

The Dementia Interpreter course is a half day experiential training session where a volunteer in care will use various pieces of equipment that will impair their ability to communicate, giving them similar communication barriers that people living with a dementia may experience. Not only does this build empathy with how communication barriers may affect people, but attendees will also learn that communication never stops, it may just happen in forms that we currently don’t recognise due to deterioration of the brain and sensory impairment. This is the start of learning the language of dementia and provides people with essential skills to effectively communicate with people living with a dementia.

It is very apparent that the world has a fundamental issue with communicating with people who live with a dementia. High-quality communication will improve interpersonal relationships and make life easier day-to-day for people living with and affected by dementia.

Course content includes:

  • The language of Dementia and what is a Dementia Interpreter
  • Overview of Aphasia
  • Communication
  • Practical session
  • Interpreting behaviour
  • Five stage plan
  • Overview of Dementia Dictionary
