Devon Care Homes Nursing Education Forum

With immense demands on time and resource, prioritising education can be challenging. However, the feedback for the 3 DCHC/Indago Peer Forums we have held to date clearly shows the value of an hour a month to connect, share knowledge, experience, and achieve required professional development. As one participant identified, ‘this sense of shared purpose is vital.'

To date, the forums have taken the format of a presentation from a subject matter expert, followed by discussion and questions. Participants are asked to fill in a very quick evaluation just before the end of the hour. They are then sent a certificate of attendance, the presentation slides, and a reflective journal sheet partially pre-populated (with objectives of the training and alignment to NMC code).

Three sessions have so far been held:

  • Introduction to the forum, leading a team and supportive networks
  • APIE qualities and values aligned with RN and NMC
  • SBARDs and deteriorating patients

Future sessions are as follows:

  • 24 September - Pain management, impacts and care plans
  • 22 October - Nutrition and hydration
  • 26 November - Continence
  • 17 December - Tissue viability in social care setting & grading of pressure sores

Additional planned topics include:

  • Medication principles
  • Diabetes
  • End of Life Care
  • Best interest and DOLS
  • Social care Advisory council
  • CQC and KLOE
  • CPD

Here are some evaluation quotes to date:

This an excellent format to learn and share.

Training was clear ,concise and well presented.

Really interesting session and although we are using the framework inadvertently, we will now be using it as a Tool with the clear and detailed framework it provides.

I thought this was a really good training session, with a short and succinct presentation about a really relevant subject.

Helpful and great opportunity to meet and share.

Truly grateful …insightful…attained an indepth knowledge…
