Devon Care Homes Nursing Education Forum

DCHC has collaborated with Indago Development to bring a series of learning sessions for registered nurses and other clinicians working in and with social care.

Join us for our next Forum on 17th December at 2pm with a focus on End-of-Life Care.

In this session, we'll be joined by Catherine Hughes from Rowcroft Hospice and Gabriela Ogreanu, Registered Manager at Sefton Hall Care Home.

Speakers:

Gabriela Ogreanu

Gabriela has a background in nursing, but chose to support others through a leadership role. This role enables her to influence how individuals with complex behaviours, related to dementia and other conditions, are cared for.

Sefton Hall became an End-of-Life Gold Standard Framework care home in August this year. Gabriela has learnt, through this programme, how best to support residents, families, and staff, especially during the most sensitive moments of someone’s life.

Catherine Hughes

Catherine began her career as a hospice nurse in Texas in 1992. She has experience in oncology and joined Rowcroft Hospice in 2007, working in the Inpatient Unit, Day Services, and Education Team. Whilst working in the Education Team, Catherine led projects for care homes in South Devon and tested the advance care planning brief intervention in practice. Catherine has been part of the Advanced Communication Skills Facilitation Team since 2018 and is a L1 Restorative Justice Facilitator.

Content:

Gabriela’s talk will focus on the importance of advance care planning. Not so much from a clinical angle, but from the emotional and human perspective – the small, overlooked details that can make a big difference, but are sometimes missed in the rush of a busy day. Gabriela will also share some of the changes that have been implemented at Sefton Hall and how these changes have transformed the way they approach End-of-Life care.

Catherine will discuss the Planning for the Future Hub, which Rowcroft is evolving year on year as a resource for both healthcare professionals and the public. She will also share their offer of becoming a Champion for Advance Care Planning using a Brief Intervention Tool. Her plan is to briefly introduce the 12 tiles and talk about top tips on opening these types of conversations.

We look forward to seeing you on 17th December!
